ANNUAL REPORT 2006-07
It is with great pleasure that I place before you this report of the activities of UDAAN Society for the year 2006-2007.
It is a matter of great joy for us to share with you some information about our on going programme through UDAAN Society. We are successfully moving ahead in executing various leadership programmes and facilitating to build up leadership qualities among the marginalized and also for volunteers in various areas. We are also privileged to be a partner with you in carrying out different people oriented programme.
We are now in our 3rd year of our work as the registered society came into existence on 13th of December 2004. We feel a great confidence in working towards our vision 'To build an integral society based on Equality, Justice and Peace'. It is a time to renew the existing policies and strengthen our commitment to the development of an equitable, just and peaceful society.
Voluntary work was undertaken with immense zeal and enthusiasm this year. Community organization, skill trainings etc. were given great importance and were implemented with fervor to enable people to live with dignity. Commendable efforts were made in ensuring people's participation as partners in development. This (ideology) permeated into every sphere of UDAAN Society activities and programmes. It called for an effective decentralization, not merely a transfer of financial resources but a change in focus- a change whereby people become decision- makers and important actors in the process of development.
 
A brief look into the activities and programmes carried out by the UDAAN Society during the year is as follows: -
 
1)
COLLABORATION WITH CONFEDERATION OF NGOs OF RURAL INDIA(CNRI)
(A)
PARTICIPATION IN ANNUAL MEETING OF CNRI
Confederation of NGOs of Rural India (CNRI) is a national level group of nearly 4000 NGOs of same ideology. The organization is working as a platform for NGOs to share their views on issues affecting all the NGOs. While organizing its second general meeting UDAAN president on behalf of NGO took part in National level Annual Meeting of CNRI held at hotel Ashoka from dated 17-19 April 2006.
(B)
PARTICIPATION IN HANDICRAFT MELA THROUGH CNRI
CNRI in order to promote Handicraft among CNRI member NGOs and Self Help Groups in collaboration with Ministry of Handicraft organized a Handicraft exhibition 15 days in the month of July 2006 in Rajiv Gandhi Handicraft Centre at New Delhi. UDAAN society also participated and put two stall with four artisans of embroidery, patchwork and wooden craft from Rampur and Aligarh.

LAUNCHING OF JEEVAN MADHUR POLICY
Insurance and saving is the miracle for down trodden and people living with abject poverty. As this is the group living in highest threat to life, their insurance cover is best social service. When heard about the collaboration of CNRI with LIC for the JEEVAN MADHUR policy, Organization took initiative to work on this issue. The best part of policy is that it is been implemented through member NGOs of CNRI and not through any of the traditional agents.
21 specified person of UDAAN was trained and working to provide insurance cover for underserved and downtrodden. With in short span of time 35 such policies are done by volunteers.
 
2)
HEPATITIS 'B' VACCINATION CAMPS
Prevention is better than cure is catchphrase of health related issues at present. Keeping in mind this intention of government institutions, organization has taken initiative to deliver vaccine of Hepatitis 'B' through all the premiere schools of Aligarh urban and nearby rural areas. Nearly 5000 children and parents in 50 vaccination camps were vaccinated in these camps. This campaign was organized in association with Almighty Welfare Organization and Dwarika Gramudyog Sansthan.
 
3)
HEALTH CHECKUP CAMP
Present scenario of health, environment, and hygiene compelled UDAAN to plan health checkup for children.
The activity was organized in association with TAJ HOSPITAL AND PARAMEDICAL INSTITUTE, ALMIGHTY WELFARE ORGANIZATION AND DWARIKA GRAMUDYOG SANSTHAN. Eye checkup, weight, blood sample collection, urine test, ENT checkup was done with nominal charges.

PARTICIPATION IN MCH TRAINING AT ANMTC
Community Food and Extension Unit, Ministry of Woman and Child Development, New Delhi with Department of Health, Aligarh has organized five days training on food and nutrition for block Child Development Project Officer and representative of NGOs. UDAAN representative Mr. Sanjay Sharma took participation in the training.

NATIONAL ORS DAY
A large no. under - five deaths are attributed to diarrhoeal diseases, which in turn are related to unsafe water supply, poor sanitation and hygienic practices. The scenario is worst in rural setting where availability of proper health facilities is in turmoil. Keeping in this meager condition of health arena and death of under five children UDAAN participated in 'Health Run' organized on 29th July 2006 the National ORS day. The theme of run was
'KYA AAP BARENGE MERE SAATH UDAAN', The run was part of series of same activity done in 32 worst affecting districts of UP and Uttranchal by USAID and ICICI.
Sitting MLA from Aligarh city Mr. Vivek Bansal flag off the run, which was started from Railway station to MLA residence. Four schools of district along with five local NGOs took participation in the run.

 
6)
PULSE POLIO MAHA RALLY
The dreaded disease of Polio is always seen as challenge to western UP. Year 2006-07 was the worst affecting year in terms of Polio. After all the efforts from major stakeholders and funding agencies, the virus not seems to be controlled in near future. The behind spread of virus is still reluctance shown by thousand of families of district Aligarh. UDAAN is working for awareness generation and social mobilization for Polio since its inception. On request of district health officials UDAAN took participation in district MAHA RALLY for Polio awareness, which was inaugurated by DM Aligarh Shri Santosh Yadav. Chief Medical Officer Dr. R.B. Agarwal address the participants.

COVERAGE OF ORGANIZATION ACTIVITIES DOORDARSHAN TEAM
UDAAN is doing capacity building, IEC and social mobilization activities in the field of sanitation for last three years. An added gem in the thrown of UDAAN was attached when this year Doordarshan team visited Aligarh to cover rural development activities for KRISHI DARSHAN. It was our pleasure that UDAAN activities were also picturised by Doordarshan team in Nagalia Gorola. On behalf of organization, President Mr. Gyanendra Mishra gave detailed interview about the sanitation and hygiene related activities, which was telecast on 20th March 2007.
 
8)

EXPANSION OF CONSULTANCY DIVISION OF UDAAN
The present work culture among NGOs surviving here in UP and Uttranchal are lacking behind in professionalism. Among those are so called big NGO with millions of grant in aid. They are even
deficient in documentation, financial management, project proposal writing HRM, report writing monitoring and evaluation.
The organization with its trained and skilled work force in the field of social sector is devoted to provide its consultancy services to such organizations.
During its expansion of consultancy services, the UDAAN has provided consultancy to Jagriti Jan Kalyan Samiti Aligarh, Gram Vikas Samiti Ladhaua, Mahila Jagrukta anvam Jan Kalyan Sansthan Dehradun, Jagrukh Mahila Jankalyan Samiti ADA Aligarh
.

TSC TRAINING OF GRAM PRADHAN AND ANGANWADI WORK AT DISTRICT MATHURA
The organization under its consultancy to different government and non-governmental organization provide one day training to Gram Pradhan and Anganwadi workers of Raya block of Mathura after been invited by District Panchayat Raj Officer Smt. Nandini Jain. Under the training programme the
key issues concerning TSC lie behavioral changes, demand generation, IEC, toilet construction, IPC, role and responsibilities of PRI and Anganwadi workers were discussed in detail. The ADPRO, BDO and ADO (P) of concern block were present in the training.
 
 
10)
PROMOTION OF FORCE LIFT HANDPUMP IN DIFFERENT DISTRICTS OF UP
As per GoI guidelines all the primary junior and higher secondary school must have hand washing facility with proper water supply to urinal and toilets. To support this concept UDAAN has taken initiative to promote force lift technology in many of the districts of UP and Uttranchal. Force lift is the device designed and developed by UNICEF to lift water upto the height of 40 feet without electricity and motor by doing minor changes in India Mark II hand pump. The technology is beneficial in outreach and outskirt village school where to lack of electricity and lift technology the toilets are not used.

RURAL & AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
Under the rural development programme of the society the farmers of two village of Block of District were informed about the methods of scientific agriculture. On this occasion improved seeds were distributed free of cost among the villagers. Apart from this they were demonstrated the methods of preparing vermicompost.
Further the farmers were demonstrated the biodynamic manures and were encouraged to adapt the methods of non-organic farming.
The participants of this programme were benefited largely and agreed to encourage others to join these methods of non-organic farming.

VOCATIONAL & HANDICRAFT TRAINING PROGRAMME
Keeping on the mind the objectives of removal of poverty by reducing the problem of employment the society has been instrumental in taking various concrete steps in the direction of removal of poverty. Society has started a Vocational Training Programme. In this training Women and Youths are provided training in different field like Knitting & Tailoring, Chicken Embroidery, Type & Shorthand, Food Processing, Fashion Designing etc. by experienced trainers. In this center Trainees are provided training in field of Manual Art known as Handicraft. The main aim of this programme is to make the trainees so skilled that they may become self-dependent and stand on their own feet.
 
13)
ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAMME
Considering very high level of illiteracy the society has started with the help of volunteers organizing education programmes on regular basis.
Considering the huge success in organizing these programmes the society has continuously been distributing necessary books free of cost to the participants of this programme.
The participants of this programme were benefited largely and the parents of the participating children were agreed to encourage others to join these.
Further, the society has decided to establish a school in the area to cater to educational needs of the local people. Attempts are being made to generate funds for the same purpose as and when the management finds it practical it will start working on the project
.
 
14)
DRUG DE-ADDICTION AWARENESS PROGRAMME
The Society has been conducting camps aimed at raising awareness about the bad effects of the alcoholism and drinking. The volunteers of the society went into the villagers to raise consciousness about the effects of smoking and drinking and use of tobacco. Help of posters and banners was taken to make the presentation.
Apart from this the persons who have given up the habit of drinking encouraged people to follow their patch and the restraint that one needs to take to give up this habit.
It was demonstrated that thousands of people die every year because of the use of tobacco and other like thongs

15)
S.C., S.T., OBC'S & WELFARE PROGRAMME
Despite of passing of so many years after independence Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes and Minorities have yet been associated in the main stream of the Society. They still need a lot of support a not only from the Government but also from the society and NGO's. Understanding its responsibility the Society has organized a number of programmes targeted at the welfare of the SC/ST/OBC's. This includes imparting Non-formal Education in the areas of SC/ST/OBC's, providing them technical and Financial help in setting up their own business and pursuing higher studies.
 
16)
PROGRAMME ON WOMEN RIGHT
The Society has organized a programme on women right at District. In this programme was attended by a member of women participants. The NGO's and the member of society told about the fundamental rights of the women and also ask to educate all the women in rural and urban areas to stand face a problem, which always happens in their lives time to time.
 
17)
CONSUMER AWARENESS PROGRAMME
Consumer awareness camps were organized to make public aware of the rights available under the consumer protection Act, 1956. The Programmes were highly appreciated by the attendants.
It is generally found that the consumers, despite of paying competitive prices are offered low quality products by the companies. Though the products are packed in very attractive packages but their quality happens to be very low. The producers and sellers cheat this way consumer every day. The situation is not too different in the cases of services also. The attendants of the programme were explained various remedies available to them under the consumer Protection Act, 1986 and thee rules and procedures for filing the suit way and manner of filing the appeals.

Further, they were given names and addresses of different consumer associations whom they can contact in case of need.

CHILD / WOMEN LABOR AWARENESS PROGRAMME
A programme on Women & Child Labour was organized by the Society on Labour Day. In this programme the volunteers aware the public about women/child labour and told them about labour act to the participants.
 
19)
ENVIRONMENT AWARENESS PROGRAMME
The society organized a camp at district on World Environment Day to discuss the impact of growing pollution on the human health and environment. The eminent speakers discussed the factors lending to increase in all types of pollutions including water, air and sound pollution.
It was felt that there is need to speeded the process of removing old vehicles, reduce the use of plastics, compulsory use of effluent treatment plants by the industries and all other methods which can be helpful in reducing and controlling the pollution.
On the same day the society organized a programme comprising of a painting contest and a debate on the issues concerning pollution. A number of students were participating participants of different schools. At the end of the programme prizes were distributed among the winners of the contest
.
 
20)
ROAD SAFETY PROGRAMME
The Member of Society organized a programme on Road Safety. The main aim of this programme was to aware the public by the rules of the roads and the benefit of these rules. The programme was appreciated by the public vary much.
 
21)
WELFARE PROGRAMME FOR STREET PERSONS
The members of society organized welfare programme for street person on human right day. Medicine, fruits, clothes and many other things were distributed among the street children. The volunteers also started primary educational programme. Books and other educational material was also distributed free of cost among the children.
There was no other business to transact. Therefore the meeting was terminated with vote of thanks to chair.
 
22)
WORLD HEALTH DAY-AWARENESS THROUGH MOBILE MEDICARE UNIT
7th of April 2006 was observed as World Health Day by UDAAN society with the help of health department. This was the awareness and sensitization programme inaugurated by the CMO of Aligarh Dr. R.B.Agrawal in presence of District Immunization Officer Dr. Bal Kishan, District Malaria Officer Mr. Rajesh Sharma and personage from distinct professions. The other objective of this programme was also to convey the message to the community about different health related programmes like DOTS, leprosy AIDS< RCH,vector born & communicable diseases and routine immunization along with services provided for them by Deptt. Of health. The whole programme was organized with the help of Mobile Medicare unit van which was managed by UDAAN society. The message was disseminated in 13 underserved areas of urban with the help of Mobile Medicare unit.
 
23)
MEETING WITH PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION FOR MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH
On 8th April 2006 a meeting was organized by UDAAN at Gulshan Alhera Public School, Nala road, Maulana Azad Nagar , Urban Slum of Aligarh to aware the community about the different stages of maternal and different problem of child from within the community. The message of community involvement for the resolution of Maternal and Child related issues like ORS solution formation was discussed and Delivery kits was distributed.45 representatives of local community were gathered during the meeting and they also gave some ideas about how they can involve in these types of activities.
 
24)
WORLD LABOUR DAY
The UDAAN Team at child labor schools at Shahjamal area observed the Labor Day. Along with this discussion was done on human fights violation of child labourers. Parents of the child labourers were also present during the meeting. Alternative professional activities were suggested by the resource persons to tackle the child labour problem. Emphasis was on the education, awareness, skill development of child labourers.
 
25)
TRAINING ON STRENGTHENING FOR SELF RELIANCE- SHG
Self-help group formation is taken as key to development of women belonging below poverty line. Women development is also taken by united Nation as key issue. Therefore this year is observed as International Year for the Women by United nation. Keeping in mind this intention of UN, UDAAN, also took initiative in this regard. Therefore, to provide training for self-reliance was provided by UDAAN, to the women SHG members on dated 10/05/2006.
Assistant Manager of Punjab National Bank, Aligarh, Mr. Ravi raj singh, Dy. Manager of Union Bank of India, Aligarh, Mr.Omprakash and Head -SHG unit (Dwarka Gramudyog) Mr. Balkishan Upadhyay were among the resource persons for the programme

26)
INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION
On 15th of August Independence Day was celebrated of head office of the organization with great pomp and show. President Mr.Gyanendra Mishra completed the flag accent ceremony. After flag assent ceremony national anthem was song by all the participants. Celebration on this occasion was done in Lala Ram Memorial Public School, president, secretary and Dy. Secretary of the organization along with volunteers took participation. Youth of the organization present cultural programme on this occasion.
 
27)
TSC TRAINING OF 'GRAM PRADHAN'S' AND 'SHIKSHA MITRA' OF 853 GP'S
Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) is the vehicle of reforms in the rural sanitation sector. The programme gives emphasis o creating awareness through intensive IEC to bring about attitudinal and behavioral changes for relevant hygiene practices. In revised guidelines and project implementation, plan (PIP) emphasis is led on HRD for proper implementation of programme.
Here in Aligarh District Sanitation Committee decided to orient Gram Pradhan's and Shiksha Mitra of all 853-Gram Panchayat's through 12 training programme. The programme was successfully executed in the presence of District Magistrate Shri S.K. Yadav, DPRO Shri S.K. Baranwal and other district and Block level officials from 21 August - 12 September 2006.

TEACHERS DAY CELEBRATION
Under the auspicious guidance and leadership of Dr, HN Singh, reader, Department of Sociology DS Degree College, Aligarh, teacher day was celebrated on the birth anniversary of our beloved President Late. Shri. Radhkrishnan on dated 5th of September. A seminar on the topic "Teacher and Students:-Future of country" was also organized on the occasion. Dignitaries like Prof. Noor Mohammad, Mohd. Shahid, KS Tomar, Mohd. Tahir , delivered lecture on the topic.

PROGRAMME ON WORLD HINDI DAY
A seminar on world Hindi Day was organized at the head office of the organization on dated 14/09/2006. Prominent professors and known Hindi teachers took participation in the programme. A plane of action to speed up the Hindi awareness campaign was discussed too. All the persons invited were of the view that the status of Hindi known persons is been subdued and they are seen inferior to the others. That is why a need to mobilize government machinery to work in Hindi is seen.

WORLD AIDS DAY
On dated 01/12/2006 world AIDS day was observed and a seminar was organized on the occasion at head office of organization. Official from District Hospital Mr. Rajesh Sharma, Dr. Anand Shahnam, Dr. SK Sharma and Dr. Pahal Singh were among the participants. They also put light on the services provided at district hospital for the blood check up and counseling of patients Dr. pahal Singh in his lecture emphasized on ABC (Abandon, be careful and use of Condom) approaches to prevent HIV/AIDS.

WORLD DISABLE DAY
On the occasion of World Disable Day UDAAN members took participation in district level sports competition for handicapped children held at Upper primary School at Elampur, Block Lodha. These activities provide a platform to disabled for their all around development and exposure. Then BSA Smt. Pushpa Singh gave moments to 240 children at the end of the programme. District coordinator total Literacy Campaign Mr. Pradeep Chaudhary, ABSA of each block, PTA, and District Scout Officer took participation in the programme.

WORLD AIDS DAY
13/12/2006 was observed as Foundation Day of the organization. A meeting followed by cultural programme by volunteers was the attraction of the day. On this occasion a programme was done to honor the most committed and dedicated volunteers. The volunteers were selected by PMU, General body, Executive committee, Advisory group members. On this occasion Plantation was done at Primary School Manjoorgari by ADPRO (T) Shri. J.R. Gautam along with School Teachers and volunteers of the organization.
 
33)
TRAINING PROGRAMME OF 256 GRAM PRADHANS AND MOTIVATORS UNDER TSC
After the successful implementation of above training of Gram Pradhans, District Sanitation Committee gave charge of one day training of Gram Pradhans and Motivators of 256 Proposed Nirmal Gram Panchayats for year 2007-08.
The special attraction of the training was first time use of modern technique of LCD projector. The training was organized from 16 -22 January 2007 and onsite at four proposed Nirmal Gram Panchayats of Takipur, Bulapur Khedia, Nagaria Gorola and Singharpur for the year 2006-07 of Aligarh.
The programme was designed participatory with infotainment tools and techniques. Resultly, an undercurrent among Gram Pradhans was seen for the implementation of TSC in their respective Gram Panchayats.
By seeing organization efforts in this regard Gram Panchayat Nagalia Gorola gave Memento to organization on dated 20-01-2007.

IODINE DEFICIENCY DISORDER (IDD) PROGRAMME
In UP UNICEF through Moti Lal Nehru Medical College, Allahabad is implementing IDD programme. CREATE Lucknow is working as mother NGO for this programme. The project is implemented in mission mode in 54 districts of UP.
UDAAN is implementing the IDD programme in 12 blocks and Aligarh Urban of district Aligarh. Through this programme IEC and awareness generation activities like Training of Iodine testing for community, students and retailers, wall writing, rallies, poster pasting, communication with stake holders is been done.
Promotion of iodized salt and increase in consumption in remote and outreach areas of district is the objective behind implementation of this programme. The programme is been started from 1st of February 2007 to 31st of December 2007.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN DAY
08/03/2007 was observed as International Women Day. The day was celebrated by conducting a programme on women fights and issues related to women emancipation were discussed. Along with this future course of action with activities was discussed. Responsibility of each and every member to make women awareness programme more successful was divided and given.
 
36)
MID DAY MEAL PROGRAMME
Organization under the aegis of Department of Primary Education has launched a Mid day Meal distribution programme in three school of urban Aligarh. Under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan there is provision of distribution of mid day meal for children studying in primary schools. The organization at present is distributing the meal in three schools of Nagla Masani.
